I've found a place to live. It's in Amaroo, which roughly translates to 'one of those newer suburbs further out from the city with lots of similar looking houses on neat streets where the buses are much less frequent and the redbacks still thrive', but there are some good reasons for choosing this place. It's currently inhabited by a couple and a second guy; I've met all three of them and we seem to get along well enough. They're all in their mid to late 20's and the two guys are public servants, while the girl is a nursing student. This means that the place should be fairly quiet and drama free; people who work full time of that age group tend to have less time for raging parties and peronal fiascos. The house is being leased from the girl's parents, and she and her partner hope to eventually buy it. This means minimal chances of the lease being dumped on me when other people decide to move on (they've been there two and a half years already), and the parents-as-landlords deal means the place will be well maintained.
Phone use doesn't require the obtaining of a security key from a stern landlord, and they do have a dial-up net connection (ADSL isn't available in the area yet, which gives you some idea of how far out it is, relatively speaking). The house itself is really nice - a kitchen with shiny new appliances and lots of space, and ducted gas heating in winter. I'm only sharing the bathroom with the single guy; the couple have an ensuite of their own.
Plus, there's a puppy. That's a good sign in itself because it means the people living there are more likely to be responsible and compassionate as well as reasonably settled. It's also good for me personally because I've been wanting a pet for ages, but I didn't think it would be feasible or fair while I'm not very settled, and probably not while I'm renting full stop. Living with a surrogate pet - and one who seems to really like me, as a bonus - is a good middle path.
It'll mean going a bit further for groceries (a ten minute bus ride versus a two minute bus ride), and the buses only come once an hour during the day outside of peak hour. But I think it's manageable, much as I like being in the thick of things, and a small price to apy to have a place that meets almost every other requirement I could have. So Mum and Ingo are trundling down (...again) tomorrow, and I'm hoping to do all the good things like buying a bed and desk of my own while they're here, as well as shifting my stuff over to the new place in their car. Hopefully it'll all be sorted by next Monday.
The address and phone number will be going around by email once I'm in the house but if anyone needs them before then, email or SMS me.
