This week I've been taking my first real holiday since January. There have been public holidays and the odd day of TIL snatched here and there but nothing more than a day or so extra at a stretch. Of course, under the current circumstances, 'holiday' has meant looking after a medicated guide dog, who, as Matt so aptly put it, is 'stoned out of his gourd', dealing with the break up of my relationship with Matt and subsequently beginning the search for a new place to live. As it happened I ended up working on Monday anyway; one of the organisations we have a close affiliation with is down a policy officer and I offered to volunteer for them on my day off until they got someone in. They decided to pay me, which is Of The Good given the need  for extra moving cash, but does mean I'm a little more time strapped.

Househunting is slowly progressing. I'm looking for a one-bedroom place somewhere near to public transport and not too far out of the city. So far I've seen two properties and applied for one. The application went in at the start of the week, so I'm quite sure that I haven't gotten it. My criteria are fairly loose: something with a security entrance would be fabulous, a communal laundry would be good for not forking out hundreds to buy that stuff upfront, a separate bedroom would be good for giving Sir Pupsalot and I more space, and a bath would just about save my sanity. I think enough space for a desk, couch, bookshelves, double bed and maybe a small two-person table is all I really need beyond the ability to get into the city though. The place I saw on Thursday barely had the room to swing a large black Labrador, and since Matt has said that as long as I'm actively  looking and applying I can be a little fussy, I chose to leave it based on the intuitive feeling that it was wrong. In the morning I'll be viewing four more places, so hopefully that will throw up some more options.

Ashton's medication adjustments will take between eight and twelve weeks, during which time he's not to work and should be supervised. This will pose a significant problem if I do find somewhere else to live quickly. As it is I'm going to have to arrange to work from home three out of five days unless I can taxi him in to work with me at least once or twice; it's simply not practical for me to be housebound. I know my boss will be flexible, but there's only so long we can put back travel plans, and only so much work I can do from home when some of what I do is face-to-face meetings. I'm hoping the dog school will be able to help out a bit. If they can't then the only option is going to be retirement.

To add to all of this, it looks like I may have a minor operation the week after next. This will probably take me out of action for a week, which... well, DO NOT WANT sums it up nicely, I think.

It should be fairly obvious by now that I'm in 'think about all the practical aspects of this' mode. I'm sure I'll crash sooner or later but for now it's the best I can do.

This may seem like an awful question, but please know I ask with genuine curiosity, love and support...

Why do -you- have to move out? Given the logistical problems you're facing right now - why you? Why not Matt?

It's fine to ask. :) I could never imagine you doing anything with actual malice or intention to hurt without serious provocation.

It has to be me who leaves because there's just no way I'd be able to afford this place on my own. Rent alone would eat roughly two-thirds of my income. I don't have a desire to share with anyone else right now, and even if I did this place isn't ideally suited to it. There's one big bedroom and what could pass for a second bedroom but for the fact that it's small, oddly shaped so that you can't get too much stuff in, and it has a wall of glass bricks on one side which heat it up beyond toleration in summer even with blinds and shades either side of it. As a study it's fine; as a bedroom it would really, really suck.

Given the circumstances and the shitty real estate market, we'll probably end up setting up the second room as a bedroom for me in the short to medium term. As long as I'm not here much beyond September or so the heat shouldn't be an issue, and most of my stuff is scattered around the house as it is.
