crypticgirl: Tom from Tom and Jerry screaming in agony (argh)

So. Am I the only person around here who got freaked out by the robots in Test Chamber 16 in Portal? The ones which have children's voices and fricking laser beams?

I'm not sure I'm going to be able to move past this level...

On a night when I'm feeling crappy for a couple of reasons, I definitely think picking up some Pratchett was a good idea. To wit:

a key to the understanding of all religion is that a god's idea of amusement is Snakes and Ladders
with greased rungs.

For a long time I thought nothing could top Rincewind, but I think I'm going to like the Witch books. *hugs Wyrd Sisters*

I spent five days in Sydney last week. It started out with two days at a major conference -- most of which was spent freaking out that I'd have to give my boss' speech, with all of two days to prepare. For me, preparation means memorising the whole speech. There's no way I can hope to read fluently and keep my place without having a sheet of paper up to my nose and that's not viable, as options go.

The speech seemed to go okay, which is a Good Thing given the prestige of the conference, which had keynotes from very prominent politicans, public servants and academics. The plenary sessions, where I spoke, were reserved for mere CEOs. I did not go into the foetal position. I did not swear. I did not resort to interpretive dance. GO ME.

About my time with my Mum. Cut for a serious case of tl;dr )

I don't usually post links to YouTube fan videos because of the access issues, but this clip of women from some of my favourite shows is too good to pass up. For the interested, they are: Alias, Battlestar Galactica, Buffy, Firefly and Veronica Mars.

I really only have two complaints: No Kaylee, and NO AERYN SUN. I mean, how could you do something like this without Aeryn?
I have to confess that I'm back on the crack. Yep, that's right, I'm watching Australian Idol again this year. I'm doing that with [livejournal.com profile] blarglefiend because (a) I don't have a television, (b) it's a good way for us to catch up regularly and (c) the show is no fun watched alone without the snark. My reasons for watching are a little different to most; Idol started right around the time I got the cochlea implant and because there was so little captioned music on TV I think it had a huge influence on how well I've been able to hear music with the CI. So it's a sentimental favourite as well as being a guilty pleasure.

Speaking of pleasure, I have two words for you: Wes. Carr. He has such a good voice and his version of Fernando this week is now on repeat in my headphones. It doesn't hurt that he's cute either. I still have no idea why it is that I go for guys with long hair and beards, but there it is*.

(I'd like to have a serious relationship with just one cleanshaven guy with short hair, just for novelty's sake... but I have this funny feeling it wouldn't work out. Hell, the guys with long hair and beards don't seem to work out either, so it's not like that would change much.)

Anyway, aside from the obvious fangirl crush, I'm really liking Chrislyn and Roshani. I'm not fussed about most of the men though I think if Teale could pull his head out of his arse he'd be someone to barrack for.

*The first person to suggest that I subconsciously want to shag Jesus gets taken out the back and shot. That goes for the second, third, fourth and fifth people too. By the sixth, I might start in on slow and excruciating deaths... not that a slow death is ever likely to be pleasant.
